Written Answers. - Amalgamation of Limerick Colleges.

Michael Ferris

Question:

197 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education if she will outline her plans (1) for the amalgamation of Thomond College and the University of Limerick; and (2) the prospect of existing fourth year students in Thomond College receiving university degrees.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

231 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the stage the proposed amalgamation of the Thomond College of Education with the University of Limerick, is at.

Michael Noonan

Question:

241 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if she intends introducing legislation to make statutory provision for the amalgamation of Thomond College and the University of Limerick; if she will ensure that students at present in fourth year at Thomond College will receive their degrees from the University of Limerick; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 197, 231, and 241 together.

I propose to introduce legislation shortly to give effect to the integration of Thomond College into the University of Limerick. This legislation will enable the University of Limerick to award degrees to existing students of Thomond College. I would hope that the legislation will be enacted before the summer recess.
