Vol. 404 No. 9

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with some notices of motion under Standing Order 30. I propose to call the Deputies concerned in the order in which their notice was received in my office. I first call Deputy Ferris.

I had sought your permission to raise this under Standing Order 30 because it is a matter of public importance. The matter I wish to raise is as follows: the failure of the Minister for Health in the course of his contribution to the budget debate last week and in the course of his parliamentary answers to questions in the House last week to address any of the issues which we raised in this House in regard to the health service. This House condemns the failure of the Minister and demands that he deals, as a matter of urgency, with the critical issues raised and, in particular, with the continuing crisis in health boards which are unable to meet their requirements under the allocations allowed to them by the Minister.

Having fully considered the matter I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. I now call Deputy Spring to state the matter about which he has given notice to me.

Under Standing Order 30 I wish to raise the following motion: This House condemns the decision of the Government to make the publicly owned conference facilities in Dublin Castle available to the European Parliament Group headed by Jean Marie Le Pen, President of the French National Front, a group which does not represent anybody in Ireland and which stands for policies and views repugnant to the Irish people. This House calls on the Government to withdraw these facilities immediately and to compel Monsieur Le Pen to secure some private venue, if he wishes, for the airing of his racist and fascist views. It appears that the Government will not respond to the criticism of this decision last week, it is an abuse of this House that these facilities should be made available to his party and sets a very dangerous precedent. I ask that we be allowed to discuss it in this House.

Having fully considered the matter, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
