Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Stress Levels Among Teachers.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

48 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Education if she intends to undertake any survey or research to establish stress levels among teachers and to take steps to help teachers cope with stress; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In recent discussions with teacher representatives I undertook to examine, in conjunction with them, the availability of suitable programmes aimed at relieving stress-related problems.

I should add, that at present school management authorities have the option of organising seminars on stress for their staff, using personnel from the health boards and/or other suitable personnel.

Professional staff of my Department (psychologists and inspectors) also attend such inservice days.
