Vol. 405 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disposal of Medical Refuse.

Bernard Allen

Question:

84 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will introduce a scheme whereby general practitioners operating within the general medical services, will be facilitated by being provided with a method of safe disposal facilities for sharps, unwanted drugs and other dangerous materials arising in general practice.

General practitioners provide services to the general medical services scheme on a contract basis and, as such, it is their responsibility to dispose of sharps, unwanted drugs and other dangerous materials arising out of the course of their work. I am not aware of any doctors in the GMS scheme disposing of the materials listed by the Deputy in a manner which constitutes a danger to public health.
