Vol. 405 No. 2

Written Answers. - UN Security Council Meeting.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

31 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether he has supported the call for a meeting of the Security Council of the United Nations by members of the General Assembly; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume the Deputy's question is to be read in the context of the Gulf crisis.

The Security Council met yesterday to resume discussions of the Gulf crisis. The meeting was called at the request of Yemen which is a member of the Council. The meeting continues today, in private session.

The Security Council is the competent UN body in this matter and Ireland's position is one of full support for the implementation of Security Council decisions in accordance with our obligations under the UN Charter.
