Question:

71 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of applications which were received for Irish passports from South Africa in the years 1988, 1989 and 1990; and the number which have been granted.

Statistical information in the Passport Office is compiled on the basis of date of issue of passports and not on the basis of date of receipt of applications.

The following are the numbers of passports issued in respect of each of the years in question: 1988, 1,796; 1989, 1,692; 1990, 1,642.
