Vol. 405 No. 2

Written Answers. - Waterford-New Ross Road.

Phil Hogan

Question:

101 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the proposal by Kilkenny County Council to erect an overhead pedestrian bridge on the Waterford-New Ross Road as part of the existing road improvement works; if he will sanction the necessary finance for this project in view of the importance of this bridge to the Glenmore community; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume the Deputy is referring to a proposed pedestrian overbridge at Kill Lane on the Glenmore by-pass.

The provision of this overbridge was not included in the road scheme submitted by Kilkenny County Council and approved by my Department.

The local authority subsequently submitted proposals for the bridge and in November 1990 the authority was advised of my acceptance in principle of the proposals and of a commitment to meet the lesser of 50 per cent or £60,000 of the cost of the bridge which the authority at that time tentatively estimated at £100,000 to £120,000.

The authority have recently requested a review of the funding commitment by my Department in the light of a more detailed estimate of cost for the bridge. I am considering that request and will advise the authority of my decision shortly.
