Vol. 405 No. 2

Written Answers. - Old Age Pensioners Free Travel.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

112 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if, following the grants of licences to private bus owners to operate routes in Dublin city and throughout the country, he will ensure that all old age pensioners in receipt of free travel will be catered for by such bus operators.

The scheme of free travel for old age pensioners is a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Social Welfare.

However, in the context of the proposed liberalisation of bus services, I would like to reassure the Deputy that I will be taking whatever steps are necessary to ensure that old age pensioners, who are entitled to free travel, continue to be accommodated by both public and private bus operators in the most effective manner possible.
