Vol. 405 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tourist Industry.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

113 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will outline the discussions he has had with Bord Fáilte in relation to the reviewing of the 1991 tourist programme, having regard to international situations, including the Gulf War, and its likely detrimental effect on the tourist industry.

I have been informed by Bord Fáilte and by representatives of the industry of their views on the possible impact of international situations, including the Gulf crisis, on Irish tourism performance in 1991.

In the light of prospective difficulties, the Government decided, in the context of the recent budget, to allocate an additional £1 million to Bord Fáilte for marketing and promotion in 1991, particularly in the UK and mainland European markets.

This additional allocation to Bord Fáilte has been made with the specific objective of keeping the tourism sector on course this year with the Government's five year tourism targets.
