Question:117 Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach if there is a figure available for the remittances sent home by emigrants in each of the past ten years.
Written Answers. - Emigrants' Remittances.
Emigrants' remittances are by their nature difficult to identify. Estimates are included as part of the international transfers item in the balance of payments statement. A data collection system involving the commercial banks has had to be discontinued due to difficulties in unambiguously identifying emigrants' transfers. Estimation methods are at present being reviewed.
