Vol. 405 No. 3

Written Answers. - Emigrants' Remittances.

Austin Deasy

Question:

117 Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach if there is a figure available for the remittances sent home by emigrants in each of the past ten years.

Emigrants' remittances are by their nature difficult to identify. Estimates are included as part of the international transfers item in the balance of payments statement. A data collection system involving the commercial banks has had to be discontinued due to difficulties in unambiguously identifying emigrants' transfers. Estimation methods are at present being reviewed.

The available information is as follows:

An estimate of about IR£50 million has been included in the international transfers item in the balance of payments statement in these years.
