Vol. 405 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waiting List for Hip Operations.

Phil Hogan

Question:

115 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Health the number of people awaiting hip replacement operations in the Carlow/Kilkenny community care area at the end of December 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been informed by the South-Eastern Health Board that there were two persons awaiting hip replacement operations in the Carlow/Kilkenny area on 31 December 1990.

In 1990 I approved an additional £517,000 for the provision of elective orthopaedic services in the South-Eastern Health Board area and I agreed a number of measures with the board which have enabled the output to hip replacement operations in the region to be greatly increased. This increase is quite substantial in that output increased from 71 hip replacements in 1989 to 150 in 1990, an increase of 108 per cent.
