Vol. 405 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tallaght, Dublin, School.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

116 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education if she will intervene to avoid serious disruption to the children attending St. Killian's primary school at Kingswood in Tallaght, Dublin 24 and ensure the retention of a teacher on the teaching staff whose employment is to be terminated by her Department mid-term until the end of the school year.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

121 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the concern of parents of children in the junior school in Kingswood, Tallaght, Dublin 24 (details supplied) at the fact that the school is to lose one of its teachers on 22 February and that the class being taught by that teacher is being divided among other classes except for nine children who will have to move class level above, to be chosen by lot; and if she will make a statement on the rationale behind this decision given that the teacher is likely to be reappointed in September given the projected enrolment in the school for September; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Jim Higgins

Question:

125 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the reasons for her refusal to sanction the retention of a teacher at St. Killian's national school, Kingswood Heights, Tallaght, Dublin 24, having regard to the fact that the school has 531 students and has 34 pupils in some classes.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 116, 121 and 125 together.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year.

In the case of St. Killian's junior national school, there were 515 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1989, which warrants a staff of principal plus 15 assistants for the 1990-91 school year.

Sanction was given for the provisional appointment of a 16th assistant from 1 September 1990, on the basis that the school was developing. This appointment was conditional upon a minimum enrolment of 545 pupils being secured when the school re-opened in September 1990. However, the actual enrolment did not meet the minimum figure.
The matter has been reviewed on appeal and I have decided the post may be retained for the remainder of the current school-year.
The school authorities have been notified of my decision.
