Vol. 405 No. 4

Written Answers. - Castleknock (Dublin) Post Primary Education Facilities.

Austin Currie

Question:

118 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the effect the decision to have a six-year cycle will have on her statement of 13 February 1990 in reply to a parliamentary question from Deputy Austin Currie, that there is adequate accommodation in post-primary schools in areas adjoining and accessible to the Castleknock area, Dublin 15 to serve the needs of the area; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Austin Currie

Question:

119 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the fact that (a) parents and teachers are experiencing difficulties in placing children in suitable post-primary schools in areas adjoining and accessible to the Castleknock area, Dublin 15, (b) that Scoil Thomáis, Laurel Lodge has a particular problem of providing post-primary education for boys, and (c) with the building of new housing in the Carpenterstown-Porterstown areas the problem will intensify, she will now reconsider her decision not to proceed with the construction of a post-primary school in the Castleknock area; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 118 and 119 together.

The decision to defer the provision of a post-primary school for the Castleknock-Laurel Lodge-Carpenterstown area was taken because of the significant number of surplus pupil places in post-primary schools in the surrounding area.

Because of on-going housing developments in the area, my Department have kept the position under annual review to take account of all relevant factors.
