Vol. 405 No. 4

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

122 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Education the reason her Department do not allow super-levy payments as expenses when determining the net income of farmers who apply for higher education grants for their family when attending third level education centres, in view of the fact that the income tax inspectors allow all such levy payments when determining the net taxable incomes of all farmers.

Administration of the higher education grants scheme is entrusted by statute to local authorities and therefore details of their treatment of super-levy payments in relation to the assessment of reckonable income would not normally come before my Department.

If the Deputy has a particular case in mind I would be happy to ask the relevant local authority to examine the matter.
