Vol. 405 No. 4

Written Answers. - Profits by Duty Free Shops.

Ivan Yates

Question:

142 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications the level of profits in each year since 1985 of Aer Rianta's duty free business activities; and the numbers employed therein.

On the grounds of commercial sensitivity I do not consider it prudent to disclose net profit levels of duty free activities at the three State airports. Turnover from the duty free shops at those airports for the years 1985-90 was as follows: 1985, £28.0 million; 1986, £26.8 million; 1987, £29.8 million; 1988, £33.9 million; 1989, 39.2 million; and 1990, £40.5 million.

The average numbers employed on duty free activities at the State airports between 1985 and 1989 were as follows: 1985, 549; 1986, 543; 1987, 530; 1988, 490; and 1989, 505.

Average numbers employed for 1990 have yet to be finalised.
