Question:72 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Marine if he would outline the total number of ships registered under the Irish flag by deadweight in the years 1970, 1980 and 1990 and the capacity of the fleet in tonnage terms.

Before 1973 fishing vessels were included in the calculation of Irish registered tonnage which were then recorded in gross registered tons (GRT) only. Consequently a separate figure for merchant ships for the year 1970 is unavailable. The total for 1973 is accordingly provided instead. The information is as follows:
