Vol. 405 No. 5

Written Answers. - Capitation Grant Levels.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

114 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education the level of capitation grants for pupils in secondary schools, community schools and colleges for each of the years between 1987 and 1991.

The rate of per capita grant in secondary schools was £140 between 1987 and 1989 inclusive. It was increased to £150 from January 1990.

The funding of community-comprehensive schools is not on a pupil capitation basis but is based on estimated general running costs of each individual school.

Community colleges operate under vocational education committees. Provision for the funding of these schools is made available through the annual current cost grants allocated by my Department to the relevant VECs.

Under theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress, a very significant increase in the per capita grant is proposed in 1992 for secondary schools not benefiting from the current provisions of caretaking and clerical services. Similar arrangements will be made in the case of community-comprehensive schools and VEC schools-community colleges. The rate of the per capita grant for secondary schools and the level of funding for other post-primary schools will be reviewed in the light of an examination currently being undertaken of unit costs at post-primary level.
