115 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications whether he has received a proposal from Telecom Éireann to pass on to subscribers the 2.5 per cent increase of VAT imposed in the budget; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Bord Telecom Éireann have informed me that the VAT increase of 2.5 per cent on telecommunications services announced in the Minister for Finance's recent budget will be implemented in customers' bills with effect from 1 April next in the case of business customers and 1 May next in the case of residential customers. The company proposes to continue for the present to absorb the previous 10 per cent VAT in the case of basic telecommunications services provided for residential customers.
