Vol. 405 No. 7

Written Answers. - Storage of Gas Containers.

Ivor Callely

Question:

43 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Labour if he will clarify the regulations made under SI 201 of 1990 pursuant to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989 governing the storage of gas containers in shops, particularly when shops are located close to residential properties.

The regulations cover storage, loading, unloading and other related activities of LPG in both cylinder and bulk containers. Storage in cylinders is covered in filling, distribution and retail premises as well as in those users' premises with more than 70 kg storage capacity.

The regulations are framework in character. They lay down general requirements which are supplemented for detailed guidance by codes of practice, developed by the National Standards Authority of Ireland and approved from time to time by the National Authority for Occupational Safety and Health. At present there are three relevant codes of practice for LPG storage; one covers the bulk storage of LPG, a second covers LPG refuelling facilities and a third covers the storage of LPG cylinders and cartridges.
If the Deputy has a particular situation in mind where cylinders are being stored in the proximity of residential properties, I would suggest that he contact the National Authority for Occupational Safety and Health with all of the relevant details. The authority would then be in a position to provide any further clarification required.
