Vol. 405 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sources of Energy.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

74 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Energy if he will list by product the major sources of energy currently in use in the State.

The sources of primary energy currently in use in the State are: Oil (crude oil and imported refined products) — 42 per cent; Coal — 25 per cent; Natural gas — 16 per cent; Peat — 15 per cent; Hydro-electricity — 2 per cent.

These percentages refer to the year 1989, the latest full year for which comprehensive and reliable statistics are available. While it is expected that 1990 figures will have shown a modest increase in overall energy consumption, the percentage allocations as between the various fuels will be broadly the same.
