Vol. 406 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Bernard Allen

Question:

27 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the reduction his housing package will bring on the 20,000 persons waiting list for local authority housing.

I refer to page 6 of A Plan for Social Housing. As indicated there, the new range of measures included in the plan, when taken together and fully operational, offer considerable potential for increased social housing provision. If this potential is fully realised, it should result in the provision of suitable housing conditions for some 5,000 households each year. This, together with a continuation of existing programmes and casual vacancies at current levels, would cater for at least 10,000 households a year. This level of social housing provision would have a significant impact on waiting lists.
