Vol. 406 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cork Downstream Crossing Proposal.

Máirín Quill

Question:

26 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Environment if, in relation to the proposed Cork downstream crossing, he will outline (1) the date when the transcript of proceedings will be available, (2) the date he will receive the inspector's report, (3) the date of his decision authorising the go-ahead of the project, (4) the time scale for design-site investigation, (5) the date of commencement of actual construction work on site, and (6) the date of completion of the project.

The transcript of evidence taken at the public inquiry convened to examine the bridge order application by Cork Corporation is now with the inspectors who conducted the inquiry and who are preparing a report which I expect to receive about the end of this month.

Because of the complexity of the issues involved, it would be wrong of me to set a deadline at this stage for a decision. However, I can assure the House that I will deal with the matter as soon as possible. I can also state unequivocally that the Government are committed to a downstream crossing and it has been included in the operational programme on peripherality which envisages construction during the period 1993-96.
