Question:

96 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Finance the breakdown of the price per litre of petrol and LPG for each of the past five years between (1) basic price, (2) excise duty and (3) VAT.

The information, in so far as it is available, at mid-year for each year in the period 1986-90 and on 8 March 1991 is as follows:

The information is based on the retail price of a litre of premium leaded petrol, as supplied by the Department of Industry and Commerce.
I am informed by the Minister for Industry and Commerce that there is no official information available on the price of LPG; accordingly, I am not in a position to give the basic price as requested by the Deputy.
The rates of excise duty applying, at mid-year in the period 1986-90 and on 8 March 1991, to non-automotive and automotive-LPG are as follows:

All LPG is liable to the reduced rate of VAT, which was 10 per cent in the period up to 28 February 1991 and 12.5 per cent from 1 March 1991.
