Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Persons in Custody.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

115 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice the number of accused persons remanded in custody in the year 1990 and the periods spent in custody differentiating between (1) cases where an accused was considered ineligible for bail and (2) those who were unable to meet the terms of bail set.

The annual reports on prisons and places of detention set out the numbers of prisoners committed on remand each year. The most recent report published was for 1988. Statistics in relation to 1989 and 1990 are being compiled at present.

The information sought at (1) and (2) is not readily available. To the extent that it could be obtained the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time would be required.
