Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Violent Crime in Dublin.

Seán Barrett

Question:

122 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to appoint trained gardaí to deal with the type of violent crime which is on the increase in the Dublin area and its environs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While there was an increase in 1990 in the number of crimes involving violence reported in the Dublin Metropolitan Area over the 1989 figures, I should point out that there has been an overall decline of over 17 per cent in the past two years in this type of crime.

All gardaí are trained to deal with all types of crime, including crimes of violence. I might mention that some 280 newly-appointed gardaí have been assigned to Dublin since June 1990. These recruits have come through the new, extended training course for Garda trainees which is tailor-made to meet modern police requirements and equips them with a wide range of practical skills to enable them to discharge effectively the duties entrusted to them.
