Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Junior Certificate Funding.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

67 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the amount of additional funding allocated in respect of resources for the junior certificate in the school years 1989-90 and 1990-91; the way in which these moneys were distributed between secondary, community, comprehensive and vocational schools; and the headings under which the money was allocated.

In each of the years in question a total of £1 million of additional funding was made available to enable schools to equip themselves for the junior certificate subject.

The grant was calculated in proportion to the enrolment of each school subject to a minimum grant of nearly £470 for the smallest schools.

In addition to the grant in respect of the junior certificate, grants were also made, at the rate of £5,000 per school to schools selected to teach the subject junior technology at junior certificate level.

Grants totalling £310,000 and £280,000 were paid under this latter heading in 1989-90 and 1990-91 respectively.

I propose to circulate a tabular statement giving details of these grants.
