Vol. 406 No. 5

Written Answers. - Departmental Building Programme.

Séamus Pattison

Question:

25 Mr. Pattison asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline, given the quality of accommodation in the Defence Forces, the way in which the further £2 million reduction in his Estimate, as confirmed in the Budget Statement, can be justified; and if he will outline the programmes which will now have to be postponed or cancelled in 1991 by reason of this decision.

Significant improvements have been made in the quality of the accommodation available for the Defence Forces in recent years. An example is the new barracks which was opened in Cavan last year. Major building works have also been completed in Monaghan and Kilkenny Barracks, Clancy Barracks, Dublin and Finner Camp, County Donegal.

I am carrying out a full examination of all building proposals with my Department with a view to deciding on priority requirements. At present there are major works under way at Cathal Brugha Barracks and McKee Barracks, Dublin, Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick and major works are planned for the Naval Base, Haulbowline, Renmore Barracks, Galway and the Curragh Camp.

The provision of £8 million for this year's building programme compares favourably with the average annual amounts provided for this purpose over the last ten years or so.
