Vol. 406 No. 5

Written Answers. - Ringaskiddy (Cork) Land Acquisition.

Bernard Allen

Question:

24 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Defence if he will make a statement on his Department's efforts to acquire 15-20 acres of prime industrial land at Ringaskiddy, County Cork from the Cork Harbour Commissioners which is on the waterfront and serviced at huge expense to the taxpayer.

Peter Barry

Question:

82 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Defence if his Department or the Naval Service have approached the IDA or the Cork Harbour Commissioners to purchase or otherwise acquire land; the purpose for which this land is required; and if he has satisfied himself that no other suitable land is available in the area.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 24 and 82 together.

My Department are in the process of acquiring a 15 acre site of reclaimed foreshore in State ownership at Ringaskiddy, County Cork to provide training facilities for the Naval Service. This requirement has arisen as a result of the transfer in 1985 of Spike Island to the Department of Justice.

Six sites in the vicinity of Ringaskiddy have recently been evaluated by the Department in conjunction with the Naval Service but, for a variety of reasons, none was found to be suitable for the purpose intended.
