Vol. 406 No. 5

Written Answers. - New Ross (Wexford) School.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

76 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the inordinately high number of pupils in some classes at the Christian Brothers primary school, Mount St. Joseph, New Ross, County Wexford; the way in which she proposes to rectify this situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

School authorities, in particular the principal teacher, are responsible for arranging the organisation of a school so as to ensure that no class group exceeds the following guidelines set down by my Department: 39 in the case of a single-grade class group; 38 in the case of a class group with two consecutive grades; and 35 in the case of a multi-grade class group.

My Department have examined the position regarding maximum class sizes at the Christian Brothers' primary school, New Ross, and found that the guidelines on maximum class sizes, as stated above, are not being breached.
