Vol. 406 No. 5

Written Answers. - EC Directive 89/48/EEC.

Richard Bruton

Question:

77 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education whether the EC Directive 7533/88 on recognition of the higher education diploma throughout the EC, is enforced; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the Deputy is referring to Council Directive 89/48/EEC of 21 December 1988 on a general system for the recognition of higher education diplomas awarded on completion of professional education and training of at least three years duration. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that I signed regulations on 2 January 1991 which came into operation on 4 January 1991 whose purpose was to give legal effect in the State to the Directive 89/48/EEC. The regulations are entitled European Communities (General System for the Recognition of Higher Education Diplomas) Regulations, 1991, Statutory Instrument No. 1 of 1991.

The directive will facilitate the free movement of members of regulated professions throughout the Community and it is an important step in the completion of the Internal Market preparations in advance of 1 January 1993.
