Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bardini Reefer Wreck.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

85 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Marine the plans his Department have to raise and remove the wreck of the Bardini Reefer from the entrance to Castletownbere fishery harbour, County Cork and thereby alleviate the serious obstruction which the wreck is causing to fishing vessels entering and leaving the harbour; and the progress his Department have made with the insurers of the Bardini Reefer to finance the removal of the wreck.

I have no plans to remove the wreck referred to. The cost involved would be quite substantial.

Despite protracted correspondence between the Department and solicitors acting for the insurers, the latter are not prepared to finance the cost of removal of the wreck, and they have in fact repudiated liability in the matter.
