Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disposal of Liquid Farm Waste.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

157 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food whether he has satisfied himself that animal blood is not contaminated by other more infective tissues prior to its being spread on land; if his attention has been drawn to a method of spreading liquid farm waste on land by introducing it subsurface; his views on whether there is any merit in introducing such a system here in order to maintain our clean image for food production; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Only animals that are healthy are permitted to be slaughtered in abattoirs and blood of healthy animals does not pose a risk.

Teagasc, under the aegis of the TB investigation unit, are carrying out a comprehensive research programme on various methods of disposal of liquid farm waste. It is expected that the outcome of this research will be available by the end of the year.
