Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Counties Kerry and Clare Proposed Projects.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

140 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Finance whether he will direct the Office of Public Works to commission a full environmental impact study for the proposed interpretative centres at Dunquin, County Kerry and Mullaghmore, County Clare prior to commencement of these projects; and if he will confirm that the construction of these centres will be conditional on the results of these studies.

The visitor centres proposed for Dunquin and the Burren do not, under the statutory regulations, require environmental impact studies.

The plans for both centres have met with the approval of the planning authorities.

The proposals have been designed to the highest standards and with particular sensitivity to the environment. All of the issues which would arise in an EIA were addressed in planning the schemes.

Plans are at a very advanced stage for both projects and an EIA is not warranted.
