Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Major Road Development.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

174 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment whether, in relation to the allocation of funding for major road development as outlined by him on 6 March 1991 (a) plans have been submitted for the Ennis by-pass linking the main Limerick and Galway Roads on the main N18 artery (b) if any plans exist to relieve the chaotic congestion on the present circuitous route linking the Limerick Road and the Galway Road via the southern perimeter of the town of Ennis known as Clonroadmore and (c) the failure to submit plans for the construction of the vital by-pass on the N18 at Ennis will deny the Clare County Council funding for the project from the special grant scheme made available by the EC.

While the plans by Clare County Council for the Ennis by-pass have been approved in principle, no commitment to the provision of funds can be given at this stage.

The Ennis by-pass was not included for funding under the Operational Programme on Peripherality, 1989-1993, but will be considered for funding in the context of future programmes.

No proposals for works on the section of the N18 known as Clonroadmore have been submitted by the local authority.
