Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Detention of Woman in Turkey.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

74 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will ask the Government of Turkey to establish an impartial and independent investigation into allegations of torture and ill-treatment of a person (details supplied) whose pregnancy miscarried while in detention in September 1990 and who was rearrested in December 1990.

The Government of Turkey is aware of the importance which Ireland and other member states of the European Community attach to full respect for human rights in Turkey, including in the context of Turkey's application for membership of the EC. This point has been made by Ireland in contacts with the Turkish authorities. The case to which the Deputy refers will be borne in mind in further contacts with the Turkish authorities.
