Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Ratification of UN Convention.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

75 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs when Ireland will ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed by Ireland on 29 September 1990. The enactment of legislative measures to allow ratification is at present underway. The Child Care Bill is currently before the Seanad and the Foreign Adoptions Bill has just completed the Committee Stage in the Dáil. It is expected that the enactment of these legislative measures will be completed before the summer recess and, subject to the views of the Attorney General, will allow Ireland to proceed to ratification of the convention.
