Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of Manuscripts.

Michael Bell

Question:

11 Mr. Bell asked the Taoiseach if he will outline (1) the involvement of his Department in the preservation or publication of manuscripts of a literary and historical nature relating to Ireland, (2) the number and general nature of those so published since 1987 and (3) the involvement of the Irish Manuscripts Commission in European City of Culture activities in 1991.

The preservation and/or publication of manuscripts of a literary and historical nature relating to Ireland are primarily the concerns of the National Library, the National Archives and the Irish Manuscripts Commission, all of which function under the aegis of my Department.

The number and general nature of their publications is set out in the statement which I propose to circulate to the House.

The Irish Manuscripts Commission's programme of scholarly research and publication does not have a particular bearing on the European City of Culture activities in 1991.
