Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Electricity Generation.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

36 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Energy the proportion of electricity currently generated by wind power; if any target figure has been set for electricity generated by wind or other renewable resources; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The proportion of electricity generated at present by wind power is insignificant. No target figure has been set for the amount of electricity to be generated by wind or other renewable sources. My Department continuously monitor developments in this area both in Ireland and abroad with a view to supporting their introduction in Ireland where technical and reliability criteria can be met and where it is economical to do so. In this regard, the Deputy will be aware that I recently announced the name of the company with which I propose to conclude a contract for the construction of Ireland's first wind farm which I hope will lead to the first significant amount of wind generated electricity.
