Vol. 408 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Schools Admissions.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

160 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the anger of a number of parents in Old Bawn, Tallaght, Dublin 24 whose children have their names down for admission next September to Firhouse community college and Old Bawn community school but who have been refused admission; if she will investigate the matter and arrange to provide the additional teaching staff or accommodation which may be necessary in order that these local children, who were accepted, will be accommodated; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that there are more than sufficient pupil places available in the schools in the east Tallaght area — Tallaght community school, Old Bawn community school and Firhouse community college — to cater for all pupils requiring places next September.

With regard to staffing levels, the allocation of teaching posts to community schools and vocational education committees for any school year is determined by reference to the enrolments in the preceding September. The teacher allocations for Old Bawn community school and County Dublin VEC for the 1991-92 school session have been determined on this basis.

Old Bawn community school and County Dublin VEC have sought an increase in allocation on the basis of a projected increase in enrolments and the applications are currently being considered in my Department.
