Vol. 408 No. 1

Written Answers. - Respite Care Report.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

89 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Health whether he has studied the report by the National Rehabilitation Board on respite care; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have read the National Rehabilitation Board's booklet on respite care facilities published in October 1990, which lists the names and locations of such centres in each health board area.

My commitment to the provision of respite care facilities is evidenced by the fact that there are now approximately 200 respite care places providing care for up to 2,000 people with disabilities throughout the country. Of these, 21 places catering for approximately 200 people with a mental handicap were provided in 1990. Since 1987 my Department have made available capital grants totalling £437,000 for the development of respite care centres for people with multiple sclerosis and other physical disabilities.

I am anxious to provide additional respite care facilities and, as indicated in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, priority will be given to the development of such facilities.
