Vol. 408 No. 4
58 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the yield from DIRT tax in 1990; and whether he is in a position to outline the proportion of this which was paid by small savers with an investment of less than £3,000.
Net receipts from deposit interest retention tax amounted to £270.7 million in 1990. Statistics are not available which would enable the amount of tax referable to interest paid or credited to savers with an investment of less than £3,000 to be ascertained. I would point out that there are investment options to which DIRT does not apply: credit union interest, for example, and the interest and bonus on the small savers schemes operated by An Post — savings bonds, savings certificates and national instalment savings.
