Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Canadian Prime Minister State Visit Proposals.

Austin Deasy

Question:

4 Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach if there are any plans for a State visit to this country by the Prime Minister of Canada; and if so, if he will give details.

In accordance with normal practice, an announcement of the timing and arrangements for any such visit will be made in the two capitals simultaneously.

Can I take it from that, that a visit is proposed?

Yes, a visit is proposed. I have already announced that.

Would the Taoiseach consider it a good idea if Prime Minister Mulrooney visited both parts of Ireland, Dublin and Belfast, seeing that he has such a considerable Irish population in his own country, and that the population is very mixed between the two traditions nationalist and unionist?

The programme is something to be worked out between the two Governments.

Will the Taoiseach bear my suggestion in mind?
