Vol. 408 No. 7

Written Answers. - Compulsory Car Testing.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

135 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the implications for this country of the EC Council Directive of 27 March 1991 amending Directive 77/143/EEC on the approximation of laws relating to road-worthiness tests for motor vehicles and their trailers; whether, in the light of the directive, he will consider bringing forward the introduction of compulsory car testing here; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The directive in question is a framework one which primarily provides for the future adoption of specific Council Directives on uniform methods and standards of testing for the components-systems of vehicles which are liable to compulsory testing under EC law. The implications for Ireland will depend on the content of these future directives. The directive adopted in March has no direct relevance to the introduction of compulsory car testing in this country.
