Vol. 408 No. 7

Written Answers. - FCA Strength.

Paul McGrath

Question:

185 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the FCA strength at 1 June, 1990; and the number of those who attended annual camp in 1990.

Paul McGrath

Question:

186 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Defence the number of FCA personnel at present in training; if his attention has been drawn to the high drop out rate from training because of the scarcity of places at annual camp; and if he proposes to take any action to improve the situation.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 185 and 186 together.

The average strength of An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil in recent years has been in the region of 15,000. In June 1990 the strength was about 14,900 and that level is being generally maintained. During 1990 7,400 members attended annual training and 560 further members attended specialist training courses. FCA personnel were also engaged extensively on security duties in support of the permanent defence force.
