Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Left Hand Drive Vehicles.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

212 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if he is concerned about the implications for road safety of a substantial annual increase in the number of left hand drive vehicles being driven by residents of this country; if he will outline the regulations under which he can require owners of such vehicles to have them converted to right hand drive; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of any significant incidence of road accidents linked to the use in this country of left hand drive motor vehicles which are imported temporarily by tourists or permanently by residents.

I understand that there are no regulations in any EC member state specifying a right or left hand drive steering wheel location and I have no proposal to make such regulations.
