Question:

34 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of persons in receipt of unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance nationally at 31 March 1990 and 1991; and the estimated workforce for both dates.

The number of recipients of unemployment benefit in March 1991 was 72,500 compared with 61,670 in March 1990. The equivalent figures for unemployment assistance were 149,167 in March 1991 and 140,905 in March 1990.

The 1990 estimate of labour force for the country as a whole is 1,303,000 persons. A figure for 1991 is not yet available from the Central Statistics Office.
