Vol. 409 No. 9

Written Answers. - Qualification for Teaching German.

Richard Bruton

Question:

133 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in giving recognition to the college diploma in German for teachers in University College, Dublin, for the purpose of teaching German at second level up to leaving certificate; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The diploma in question is provided mainly for those who are already basically qualified as teachers, having secured a primary degree and a teaching qualification.

The recognition of qualifications specifically to teach a particular subject does not arise in the case of secondary schools. In so far as the qualifications necessary to teach German in vocational, community and comprehensive schools are concerned, my Department are currently examining the question of the acceptance of the diploma referred to for this purpose where the diplomate is otherwise qualified for basic recognition as a teacher in such a school.
I hope to be in a position shortly to convey a decision on this matter.
