Vol. 409 No. 10

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Female Personnel.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

33 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Defence the total number of Defence Forces personnel who are women in respect of (a) the officer corps and (b) other ranks; the proportion this represents in each case; and if any target level has been set for the recruitment of women in the current year.

There are 36 female officers in the Permanent Defence Forces representing 2.3 per cent of all officers in the force.

A total of 63 other ranks personnel are female which represents 0.54 per cent of total other ranks strength.

This year's competitions for apprenticeships in the Army and Air Corps were open to women for the first time but, pending the outcome of the competitions, it is not possible to say how many women will be appointed.

In addition a number of Army cadetships will be available for women in the current year.
