Vol. 410 No. 2

Written Answers. - Accident Investigation.

Nuala Fennell

Question:

191 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for Health if an investigation requested by the daughter of an 85 year old woman (details supplied) in Dublin 6 who received severe burns to her body when she fell into the fire at her home but was not hospitalised, has been carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The incident to which the Deputy refers happened two years ago and the elderly person in question, being the holder of a medical card, was attended to by her general practitioner. As the Deputy may be aware, there is provision under the General Medical Services contract for investigations to be carried out on the treatment of patients either at the request of the patients themselves or by a relative acting on their behalf.

The treatment of the patient concerned, who resides in the south-eastern area of the country, was the subject of a full and detailed investigation by the health board following representations by the daughter of the patient to myself and another Deputy in this House.

Replies have issued to these representations outlining the board's conclusions following the investigation and its consideration that no further action was warranted in the matter.
