Vol. 410 No. 3

Written Answers. - Arterial Drainage Schemes.

Edward Nealon

Question:

46 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the rivers on which arterial drainage is now in progress; and if EC grants are being made available in respect of all the projects involved.

Arterial drainage schemes are currently in progress on the Boyle, the Bonet and the Blackwater (Monaghan) river catchments. EC grants for these projects were received in respect of work undertaken up to 1986. No EC funds have been available for arterial drainage since the end of 1986.

Question:

47 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance if the design scheme for the catchment areas of the Owenmore and Arrow Rivers in County Sligo has now been completed; when the scheme will be posted; and the work which will be carried out in advance of drainage being commenced.

Edward Nealon

Question:

49 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance the present estimated cost of arterial drainage of the Owenmore and Arrow catchment area in County Sligo.

Question:

51 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance when arterial drainage work will commence on the Owenmore and Arrow catchment areas of County Sligo.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 47, 49 and 51 together.

Preliminary design of a drainage scheme for the Owenmore and Arrow catchment area in County Sligo has been completed. This has been subjected to a detailed cost benefit analysis and environmental impact assessment, the final reports on which are expected shortly. Pending receipt of these reports I cannot say if or when a scheme for the catchment might be undertaken, what works, if any, are likely to be included or what the cost of these works is likely to be. I would, however, hope to be in a position to make a decision on the matter in the near future.

Question:

48 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance if it is intended to carry out drainage works on the river linking Belhaval Lake to the Bonet River in County Leitrim; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

All of the scheduled works under the Bonet catchment drainage scheme to the river linking Belhavel Lake to the Bonet River have been completed. No further works are planned.

Question:

50 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance the amount of work still to be carried out on the Bonet/Boyle arterial drainage scheme in County Lietrim.

The following table shows the amount of work still to be carried out on the Boyle and Bonet drainage schemes:

Scheme

Counties

Outstanding Work

%

Boyle

Roscommon Mayo

26

Bonet

Leitrim Sligo

10

In the case of the Bonet drainage scheme, the question of the omission of certain works on environmental and economic grounds is under consideration.

Question:

52 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance when work will commence on arterial drainage of the River Mulcair catchment area.

Pending the outcome of the environmental impact assessment and cost benefit analysis of the Mulcair catchment drainage scheme, for which specialist studies were commissioned in 1990 and which are expected to be completed in spring 1992, it is not possible to say if or when a drainage scheme for the Mulcair river catchment might commence.
